What drives the cost of a local move

Most local moves in Texas are priced by the hour for a crew and truck. The total depends mostly on how long the job takes:

  • How much you're moving. Number of rooms, boxes and large items.
  • Access. Stairs, elevators, long walks from the truck, narrow streets and steep driveways.
  • Distance and traffic. Drive time between homes, and whether the move runs into rush hour.
  • Packing. Packing yourself saves money; professional packing saves days.
  • Special items. Pianos, safes, gym equipment, large art and antiques can need extra crew or gear.
  • Date. Summer, Saturdays and month-end are in highest demand.

How to compare quotes

  • Get at least two or three quotes, and make sure each covers the same inventory.
  • Ask what's included: truck, fuel, equipment, furniture pads and wrapping, and any minimum hours.
  • Ask how travel time is billed.
  • Get the estimate in writing. Texas rules require household movers to provide written estimates and terms.
  • Check that the mover is registered with the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TxDMV) and carries insurance.
A price far below every other quote is a warning sign. Low-ball quotes are a common way moving scams start.

Ways to save

  • Declutter before you get quotes. Less stuff means fewer hours.
  • Pack and label everything yourself before the crew arrives.
  • Take apart simple furniture and bag the hardware.
  • Reserve elevators and parking ahead of time so the crew isn't waiting.
  • Choose a mid-month weekday if you can.
